Quay County is a county in the state of New Mexico. Its name sounds like “kwee.”

As of the 2020 U.S. Census, there were 8,746 people living there.

Tucumcari is the county seat.

The county was named for Matthew Quay, a senator from Pennsylvania who pushed for New Mexico to become a state.

Its eastern edge is the state line between Texas and Oklahoma, which is about 103.04 degrees west in longitude.

The county has a total area of 2,882 square miles (7,460 km2), of which 2,874 square miles (7,440 km2) are land and 7.2 square miles (19 km2) (0.3%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
