Muscogee County is a county in Georgia, United States, on the Chattahoochee River across from Alabama, in the west-central part of the state near the fall line between the Piedmont and the coastal plain. It had a population of 206,922 at the 2020 census and covers 216 square miles (560 km2) of land, centred near 32°31′N 84°52′W.
Columbus is the county seat, and its postal code is 31901. Columbus and Muscogee County have operated as a single consolidated city-county government since 1971, so the county has just one incorporated city, alongside several unincorporated named communities and dozens of residential neighborhoods; it sits in the Eastern time zone and carries FIPS code 13215.
Towns & Villages in Muscogee County
Because Columbus and Muscogee County consolidated in 1971, nearly every place name below is an unincorporated community or historic neighborhood inside the single consolidated city rather than a separate municipality. Bibb City, once a small mill-village city on the county’s east side, disincorporated in 2000 and merged fully into Columbus. Fort Benning (renamed Fort Moore in 2023, though the county and older sources still use the historic name), Midland, Fortson, and Upatoi are the county’s other named communities with their own post office ZIP codes; the remaining entries are historic subdivisions and neighborhoods of Columbus itself.

Geography
Muscogee County sits at the fall line, where the Piedmont’s hills give way to the flatter coastal plain, and the Chattahoochee River forms its entire western boundary with Alabama. Fort Benning (Fort Moore), one of the US Army’s largest installations, occupies close to a quarter of the county’s land in the south. The terrain rises from river bottomland in the west to rolling hills further east, drained by Bull, Standing Boy, and Upatoi creeks.
Muscogee County borders Harris County to the north, Talbot County to the northeast, Marion County to the east, Chattahoochee County to the south, and Russell County, Alabama, across the river to the west.
Demographics
Muscogee County had 206,922 residents at the 2020 census, giving it a density of about 958 people per square mile — among the densest counties in Georgia outside metro Atlanta. Because the whole county is one consolidated city, Columbus itself accounts for essentially the entire population; the largest named unincorporated communities, Midland and Upatoi, are commuter suburbs on the county’s north and east edges. Median household income runs below the Georgia median of $74,632, reflecting the county’s urban core and large military and lower-wage service workforce.
Economy & Local Life
Fort Benning (Fort Moore), the Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence and a major infantry and armor training post, is the county’s largest employer and single biggest economic driver. Columbus’s other anchors include Aflac’s headquarters, Synovus Financial, Pratt & Whitney’s aviation-parts plant, and Piedmont Columbus Regional hospital. The Chattahoochee RiverWalk and the National Civil War Naval Museum sit along the river downtown, and the Rotary Club-run Ironman-style Riverfest and Chattahoochee Valley events draw visitors each fall.
History
Georgia created Muscogee County on June 9, 1826, naming it for the Muscogee (Creek) people whose towns once lined the Chattahoochee River. Columbus was laid out the following year as a planned river port and quickly became a textile-milling center powered by the river’s fall line. Voters merged the city and county governments into a single consolidated government in 1971, one of the earliest such mergers in the South; Bibb City, a separate mill-village municipality, held out until it dissolved into Columbus in 2000.
Getting There
Interstate 185 runs north-south through the county to link Columbus with I-85; US routes 27, 80, and 280 and the Fall Line Freeway (SR 540) provide the other main road connections.
