Los Angeles County, which is officially called the County of Los Angeles (Spanish: Condado de Los ngeles) and is sometimes called L.A. County, is the most populous county in the United States and the state of California, with an estimated 9,861,224 residents as of 2022.

It has the most people of any government body that is not a state in the United States. It has more people than 40 of the 50 U.S. states put together.

At 4,083 square miles (10,570 km2) and with 88 incorporated cities and many unincorporated areas, it is home to more than a quarter of California’s people and is one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the United States.

Its county seat, Los Angeles, is also the largest city in California and the second-most populous city in the U.S., with about 3.9 million people living there.

California’s recent droughts have put a lot of pressure on the county’s (and the city of Los Angeles’s) water security.
