Kootenai County is a county in Idaho, United States.

The county’s population was expected to be 171,362 by the United States Census Bureau in 2020, making it the third-most populous county in Idaho and by far the largest in North Idaho, accounting for 45.4% of the region’s total population.

Coeur d’Alene is the county seat and the major city.

The county was named after the Kootenai tribe and was created in 1864.

The county has a total area of 1,316 square miles (3,410 km2), of which 1,244 square miles (3,220 km2) is land and 71 square miles (180 km2) (5.4%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

Lake Coeur d’Alene and the southernmost portion of Lake Pend Oreille are included in the county’s water area. Kootenai County is located in the Idaho Panhandle and is part of the Inland Empire.
