As of the 2020 census, there were 19,198 people living there, making it the county with the fewest people in all of Maryland.
Chestertown is the county seat.
The name comes from the English county of Kent.

It is one of three counties in the state that are not part of a metropolitan statistical area.
The other two are Caroline County and Garrett County.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 413 square miles (1,070 km2), of which 277 square miles (720 km2) are land and 136 square miles (350 km2) are water, or 33%.
