Cecil County (SEE-sil) is a county in the U.S. state of Maryland, located in the state’s northeastern corner, bordering both Pennsylvania and Delaware.
The population was 103,725 according to the 2020 census.Elkton is the county seat.
Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore (1605-1675), the first Proprietary Governor of the Province (colony) of Maryland, inspired the county’s name.
Because the county’s eastern portion is closer to Philadelphia than to Baltimore, it is included in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The county is located in the Wilmington Radio Market as well as the Baltimore Designated Market Area.
The county has a total area of 418 square miles (1,080 km2), of which 346 square miles (900 km2) is land and 72 square miles (190 km2) (17%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
