Essex County is one of the centrally located counties in the New York metropolitan area, located in the northeastern part of the United States state of New Jersey.
The county was the state’s second-most populous county as of the 2020 census, with a population of 863,728, its highest decennial count since the 1970 census and a 79,759 (+10.2%) increase from the 2010 census count of 783,969.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county had a total area of 129.42 square miles (335.2 km2) as of the 2020 Census, of which 126.09 square miles (326.6 km2) was land (97.4%) and 3.34 square miles (8.7 km2) was water (2.6%).
