History

Douglas County was created in 1861, one of Nevada’s original nine counties, and is named for Stephen A. Douglas, the Illinois senator who ran against Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 presidential election. Genoa, founded in 1851 as a Mormon trading post on the California Trail, is recognized as the first permanent non-Native settlement in what is now Nevada, predating statehood by more than a decade.
