Delta is the county seat.
Delta County was formed on February 11, 1883, by the Colorado legislature from areas of central Gunnison County.
The county gets its name from a delta of agricultural land near the mouth of the Uncompahgre River, which feeds into the Gunnison River.
The county has a total area of 1,149 square miles (2,980 km2), of which 1,142 square miles (2,960 km2) is land and 6.5 square miles (17 km2) (0.6%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
