John W. Gunnison was an officer in the U.S. Army and a captain in the Army Topographical Engineers. In 1853, he did surveys for the transcontinental railroad.

The county has a total area of 3,260 square miles (8,400 km2), of which 3,239 square miles (8,390 km2) are land and 21 square miles (54 km2) (0.6%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

It is the fifth biggest county in Colorado in terms of land area. Gunnison, Colorado, is the county seat.

It is in a wide valley where Tomichi Creek and the Gunnison River meet.
