The name of the county comes from the family name of the Barons of Baltimore, who owned the Maryland English Colony.

Calvert County is a part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Washington–Arlington–Alexandria, DC–VA–MD–WV.

It is on the Calvert Peninsula, which is between the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River on the east and west.

Calvert County is in the area of Maryland known as Southern Maryland.

The average income of a family living in the county is one of the highest in the United States.

It is one of Maryland’s oldest counties, along with St. Mary’s, Kent, and Anne Arundel.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 345 square miles (890 km2), 213 square miles (550 km2) of which are land and 132 square miles (340 km2) of which are water, or 38%.

It has the third-smallest land area of all the counties in Maryland.

Solomons Island, Broomes Island, Buzzard Island, Hog Island, and Molly’s Leg are all part of the county.
