Archer County was formed in 1858 by the Texas Legislature from portions of Fannin County, and it was organized in 1880.
It is named after Branch Tanner Archer, a Republic of Texas commissioner.
The county has a total area of 925 square miles (2,400 km2), of which 903 square miles (2,340 km2) are land and 22 square miles (57 km2) (2.4%) are water.
