Logan County lies in the Cumberland Plateau section of the Appalachians, cut by the Guyandotte River and its many creeks — Buffalo, Island, Rum, and Gilbert among them — running through steep, narrow hollows. History
Logan County was formed in 1824 from parts of Giles, Tazewell, Cabell, and Kanawha counties in what was then Virginia, and became part of West Virginia when it was admitted to the Union in 1863. It is named for Chief Logan, a Mingo leader of the 18th century. The county was the staging ground for the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain, one of the largest armed labor uprisings in U.S. history, and on February 26, 1972, the collapse of a coal-slurry impoundment sent the Buffalo Creek Flood through the county, killing 125 people.
