Mingo is the newest county in West Virginia. It was made in 1895 and named after the ancient Iroquoian Mingo people.

The US Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 424 square miles (1,100 km2), of which 423 square miles (1,100 km2) are land and 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2) (0.2%) are water.
