History
Hardin County was organized in November 1819 and named for Col. Joseph Hardin Sr., a Revolutionary War veteran. The county is best known nationally as the site of the Battle of Shiloh, fought April 6–7, 1862, one of the bloodiest engagements of the Civil War’s western theater; the battlefield is preserved as Shiloh National Military Park along the Tennessee River. Savannah’s Cherry Mansion served as Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s headquarters in the days around the battle.
