History

Polk County was created December 22, 1845, by the Provisional Legislature of Oregon, carved from the original Yamhill District, and named for James K. Polk, the 11th U.S. president, who was in office at the time of its formation. Dallas became the county seat in 1856 after Independence, the original seat, lost a courthouse-relocation vote. The Grand Ronde Indian Reservation, established in 1857 as a removal reservation for more than two dozen tribes and bands from western Oregon, sits mostly within Polk County’s western hill country; the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde were terminated by the federal government in 1954 and restored to recognition in 1983.
