History
Rogers County was organized January 26, 1907, at Oklahoma statehood, from land that had been Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation. It was first named Cooweescoowee County before residents petitioned to rename it for Clement Vann Rogers, a Cherokee rancher, Confederate veteran, and delegate to the Oklahoma constitutional convention — and the father of humorist Will Rogers, who was born in the county near Oologah. Historic U.S. Route 66 crossed the county through Claremore and Foyil, and the alignment remains a heritage-tourism draw.
