History
Marshall County was organized in 1836 and named for John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States in the early nineteenth century. Holly Springs, its seat, grew quickly as a cotton-trade and rail town before the Civil War and changed hands several times during Union raids in 1862–64, including Confederate cavalry commander Earl Van Dorn’s December 1862 raid that destroyed Union supplies stockpiled there.
