History
Morgan County was organized in December 1822, carved from Delaware New Purchase lands opened to settlement after the 1818 Treaty of St. Mary’s. It was named for Gen. Daniel Morgan, who commanded American forces at the Battle of Cowpens in the Revolutionary War. The county’s earliest settlers arrived mostly from Kentucky, Virginia, and other southern states, following the White River corridor. Martinsville, platted as the county seat in 1822, later became known for the artesian mineral springs that drew health-seeking visitors through the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
