Mwanza Region (or Mkoa wa Mwanza in Swahili) is one of Tanzania’s 31 administrative regions.
The region has a land area of 25,233 km2 (9,743 square miles).
The region is roughly the size of North Macedonia’s entire land area.
The Kagera and Mara Regions border the Mwanza Region to the north across Lake Victoria, the Simiyu Region to the east, the Shinyanga Region to the south, and the Geita Region to the west. The city of Mwanza serves as the regional capital.
According to the 2022 national census, the region’s population was 3,699,872, compared to 2,772,509 in the 2012 national census.
Mwanza Region is Tanzania’s second most populous region, following Dar es Salaam Region.
