Katavi Region (or Mkoa wa Katavi in Swahili) is one of Tanzania’s 31 administrative regions. The region has an area of 45,843 km2 (17,700 square miles).
The region is roughly the same size as Estonia’s whole land area.
The Katavi Region has an eastern border with Tabora Region. The region is bordered to the south by the Rukwa and Songwe regions.
Finally, Katavi borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Lake Tanganyika to the west. The region’s name comes from Katavi, the spirit of Lake Tanganyika.
The regional capital is Mpanda. According to the 2022 national census, the region’s population was 1,152,958.
