The Kagera Region (Mkoa wa Kagera in Swahili) is one of Tanzania’s 31 administrative regions. The region has an area of 35,686 km2 (13,778 square miles).
The region is about the size of the Netherlands.
Lake Victoria, Mwanza Region, and Mara Region form the eastern border of Kagera Region. The region is bordered to the south by Geita and Kigoma regions.
Finally, Kagera shares borders with Rwanda to the west, Uganda to the north, and Burundi to the southwest.
The regional capital city is Bukoba. According to the 2022 national census, the region’s population was 2,989,299, up from 2,458,023 in 2012.
