Umuechem, Etche, is a Nigerian oil-producing village since 1958. Etche contains around 250 oil wells and flow stations[8]. South of the Niger River, it has the greatest natural gas resource.

Etche’s residents are largely farmers, earning them the nickname “the state’s food basket.” Etche is one of the host villages for Risonpalm and Delta Rubber Production Company. Igboh-Agwuruasa, Ulakwo-Umuselem, and Okehi Clans have had recent real estate growth.  Important crops include cassava, plantain, banana, and yam.

The former Eastern Regional government of Nigeria emphasised agricultural planting (especially rubber, palm oil, pineapple, and plantain), although this has since waned. The usage of tractors for these crops has reduced somewhat from 1986 to 2004.

Shell Petroleum Development Company, the leading oil operator in the area since the late 1950s, has only supported an ineffectual cassava processing mill at Umuebulu. In 2000, it attempted, though abysmally, to educate local women in operation and administration of the mill.

Smallholders produce a lot of palm oil.
