Geography
Mpohor lies in low forest country north-east of Sekondi-Takoradi, on the plateau between the coastal plain and the mining ridges around Tarkwa. It was created in 2012 when the former Mpohor/Wassa East district was divided. Streams feeding the Pra drain the eastern side. The district borders Wassa East to the east, Tarkwa Nsuaem to the west and Ahanta West to the south.
Economy and Local Life
Oil palm is the signature crop, grown both on estate land around Adum Banso and on smallholdings, and it is pressed locally for oil. Rubber, cocoa, cassava and plantain fill out the farming year, and a share of residents commute to work in Takoradi and Tarkwa. Mpohor town holds the district market and assembly offices.
Palm fruit is pressed both in mills and by hand in the villages, and the oil moves to markets in Takoradi and Agona Nkwanta. Rubber tapping gives a weekly income where oil palm gives a seasonal one. Cassava, plantain and maize fill the food plots, and gari processing is a common village trade. Mpohor’s market day draws sellers from the surrounding hamlets.
Getting There
Mpohor is reached by road from Takoradi, roughly 40 km to the south-west, by way of the Agona Nkwanta or Daboase routes. Trotros run from Takoradi and Tarkwa; feeder roads to the villages are laterite.
