Geography
Ho sits in the hill country of the central Volta Region, at the foot of the Adaklu and Galenku ranges. The town lies in a broad valley about 150 metres above sea level, with wooded ridges rising on either side and streams running down them into the surrounding farmland. Rainfall is higher and more reliable here than on the coastal plain to the south.
The municipality reaches east towards the Togo frontier, where it meets Agotime Ziope. As the seat of regional government it is the reference point for districts further south such as Akatsi North and Ketu North.
Economy and Local Life
Ho is a service and administration town. Regional government offices, the teaching hospital, a university, teacher and nursing colleges and the courts employ a large share of the workforce, and student numbers support housing, food and transport trades.
Outside the town, farming continues on the hill slopes and valley floors: maize, cassava, yam, rice, plantain, cocoyam and vegetables, with oil palm and fruit on smallholdings. Ho market is the busiest in the region, and craft weaving and small manufacturing add to local income.
Ewe is the language of daily life, alongside English in offices, schools and the courts. Ho is the seat of the Asogli traditional state, whose Te Za yam festival each September brings people back to the town from across Ghana and abroad. Weekday trade, student life and weekend funerals set the pace of the municipality.
Getting There
Ho is about 165 kilometres from Accra. The usual route runs through Akosombo and the Adomi bridge, or through Sogakope and Adidome on the Aflao highway; both take roughly three hours. Intercity buses and shared taxis run all day from Accra, and Ho has an airport with limited scheduled service.
