Geography
Binduri lies in the north-east of the Upper East Region, on the flat Sudan savanna plain either side of the White Volta. The river forms much of the district’s western and southern edge, and its floodplain carries the best farmland. Rainfall falls in one season from May to October; the rest of the year is dry, with harmattan dust from December.
The district was carved out of the Bawku municipality, and still borders Bawku to the east and Bawku West to the west. Pusiga lies further east towards the Togo border. Kusaal is the main language, with Mampruli, Bissa and Hausa also spoken.
Economy and Local Life
Farming and livestock keeping account for most livelihoods. Millet, sorghum, maize, groundnuts, cowpea and rice are grown in the rains, and onions, tomatoes, pepper and leafy vegetables in the dry season along the White Volta and around dugouts. Sapeliga is known for dry-season onion gardening. Cattle, sheep, goats and guinea fowl are widely kept, and animal sales cover school fees and farm inputs.
Small-scale gold mining and gravel winning occur near the river in places. Most trade passes through the Bawku market rather than staying in the district, and many households depend on seasonal migration south and on remittances. Binduri and Bazua hold the district’s own market days.
Getting There
Binduri sits on the Zebilla–Bawku road, roughly 10 km west of Bawku and about 80 km from Bolgatanga. From Bolgatanga the route runs east through Zebilla on tarred road. Minibuses and shared taxis working the Bolgatanga–Bawku corridor stop at Binduri; feeder roads to Sapeliga, Bazua and the riverside communities are laterite and slow in the rains.
