Geography
Zabzugu lies in the east of the Northern Region, close to the border with Togo. The terrain is savanna plain with wooded valleys, and drainage runs east into the Oti River system. Soils are light and sandy on the uplands, heavier in the stream valleys.
The district borders Tatale-Sangule to the east, Saboba to the north and Yendi to the west. One rainy season, from about May to October, sets the farming calendar.
Villages here are compact, built on higher ground away from the flood-prone valleys, with farmland worked outward from the compounds. Boreholes and dams supply drinking water, and the smaller places on this list are hamlets rather than towns. Konkomba and Dagomba communities live side by side across the district.
Economy and Local Life
Yam is the leading crop and the main source of cash, followed by maize, sorghum, groundnuts, cowpea and rice grown in the valley bottoms. Shea nuts are collected through the dry season and sold to buyers from Tamale.
Cattle, goats, sheep and guinea fowl are widely kept. Zabzugu town holds the district market, and traders also move goods across the Togo border. Dagbani and Konkomba are both spoken here.
Yam mounds are raised from December, planted early in the year and harvested from July, so the district has work through most of the calendar. Traders come in during harvest to buy at the farm gate, and lorries load for Kumasi and Accra from Zabzugu town.
Getting There
Zabzugu is reached from Yendi on the road running east toward Tatale. Yendi in turn connects to Tamale by a paved road. The eastern stretches are unpaved and slow after heavy rain, so most travel is by shared minibus or motorcycle.
