Geography
The municipality lies along the Akuapem ridge, the forested escarpment that runs north-east from Accra and reaches roughly 400 to 500 metres. Akropong, Larteh, Mamfe, Abiriw and Awukugua stand on the ridge road, with farming villages spread down both slopes. Akuapim North borders
Akuapim South to the south, Nsawam Adoagyiri to the south-west and Suhum Kraboa Coaltar to the north-west.
Streams off the ridge run west to the Densu and east towards the Volta plain, and the slopes are steep enough that farms are worked in small terraced plots rather than open fields.
Economy and Local Life
Farming carries the municipality. The cooler ridge soils suit cocoa, oil palm, citrus, cassava, plantain and vegetables, and growers truck tomatoes, pepper and garden eggs down to Accra markets through the week. Palm wine and distilling remain common village trades. Akropong has been a Presbyterian mission centre since the 1830s, and the schools and seminary there still draw students from across the country. Weekend traffic from Accra supports guest houses and roadside trade at Mamfe and Tutu.
The district assembly sits at Akropong, and the ridge towns share hospitals, senior high schools and a water supply that struggles in the dry season when ridge boreholes drop.
Getting There
From Accra the route climbs the ridge through Aburi and Mamfe to Akropong, about 50 km and some 90 minutes in ordinary traffic. Trotros and shared taxis for Mamfe and Akropong load at Madina. From Koforidua, the regional capital, drivers head south-west through Mamfe.
