Geography
Assin North lies inland in the north of the Central Region, in semi-deciduous forest drained by tributaries of the Pra. The district was reorganised when Assin Central Municipal, based at Assin Fosu, was separated from it, so some settlements listed below now sit close to that boundary. Assin South lies to the south and Upper Denkyira East to the west. The Ashanti Region begins beyond the district’s northern edge.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa is the leading cash crop, with oil palm, citrus, plantain, cassava, cocoyam and maize grown across the district. Timber and charcoal come out of the forest reserves. Assin Bereku holds the main market, and traders from the villages carry produce there and on to Assin Fosu, which serves as the wider commercial centre for the Assin country. Farming here is largely smallholder work on family land.
Twi and Fante are both spoken, and the Assin traditional areas hold their own festivals through the year. The district sits on a historic route between the coast and Asante, and the trunk road still shapes where people settle and trade. Land is held under stool and family arrangements, and caretaker farming is common on cocoa plots.
Getting There
The Cape Coast to Kumasi trunk road passes through the district, and Assin Bereku sits north of Assin Fosu on that route. Buses and trotros running between the two cities stop along the way. Cape Coast is roughly 90 km to the south; Kumasi lies to the north-west.
