Geography
Agona East lies north of the coastal belt, on rolling forest-margin country drained by the Akora and Ayensu rivers. Agona West lies to the south-west around Swedru, Asikuma/Odoben/Brakwa to the west and Gomoa East to the south; the Eastern Region boundary runs along the north. Most of the district is farmland with patches of remaining bush. Rainfall comes in two seasons and is heavier than on the coast, which is what allows cocoa this far east. The ground is broken by low hills and stream valleys.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa, oil palm and citrus are the cash crops, with cassava, maize and plantain grown for food and for the Swedru market. Palm oil pressing and gari processing are widespread village trades. Nsaba and Duakwa hold the district’s main markets, and Nsaba houses the assembly; much of the district’s larger trade still flows through Agona Swedru next door. Palm oil, citrus and cocoa leave the district by lorry, and small workshops in Nsaba and Duakwa serve the surrounding farms. Many young people work in Swedru or Accra and return for festivals.
Getting There
Agona Swedru is the gateway. From the Accra–Cape Coast highway drivers turn north at Winneba Junction and run up to Swedru, then take the Nsaba road north-east. Accra is about two hours from Nsaba in normal traffic. Trotros and shared taxis run frequently between Swedru, Duakwa and Nsaba, and feeder roads reach the outlying farming villages.
