Geography
Techiman lies in the west of the Bono East Region, at the meeting point of the forest and savanna zones. Farmland, secondary forest and grassland alternate, broken by sandstone escarpments. The Tano River rises in this country, and the sandstone outcrops at Tanoboase hold a long-venerated sacred grove; limestone caves at Buoyem shelter large colonies of fruit bats. Two rainy seasons give the district a longer growing calendar than districts further north.
Its regional neighbours include Techiman North, carved from the same territory, and Nkoranza South to the east.
Economy and Local Life
Trade dominates. The Techiman market runs at its fullest on Wednesdays and Thursdays, drawing traders from across Ghana and from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Togo and Côte d’Ivoire. Yam, maize, tomatoes, onions, plantain, cassava and grains move through it in bulk, and the lorry parks around it employ loaders, drivers and brokers.
Outside the town, households farm maize, yam, cassava, plantain, vegetables and cashew, and many sell straight into the market rather than to middlemen. Techiman also serves the region as an administrative and service centre, with the regional coordinating council, a municipal hospital, banks, secondary schools and a growing student population.
Getting There
Techiman is one of the easiest towns in central Ghana to reach. The N10 from Kumasi runs through it and continues north to Kintampo and Tamale, while roads west to Sunyani and Wenchi and east to Nkoranza and Atebubu meet at the town. Kumasi is roughly two hours by road, Accra about six. Intercity buses and shared taxis run all day from Kumasi, Sunyani and Tamale.
