Geography
Asunafo South occupies the far south-west of the Ahafo Region, in the forest zone along the boundary with the Western North Region. Streams draining towards the Bia and Tano rivers cut through it, and forest reserves take up a large share of the land. It borders Asunafo North to the north. Asutifi South and Asutifi North lie further north-east across the region.
The district is thinly built up outside its three or four main towns. Most of the population lives in farming settlements strung along feeder roads, and several communities sit close to the boundaries of gazetted forest reserves. Distances from Kukuom to the outer villages are short on the map but slow on the ground.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa dominates. Sankore, Kwapong and Noberkaw are the district’s cocoa buying centres, and the crop calendar sets the rhythm of local trade. Food farms carry plantain, cocoyam, cassava and maize, much of it sold on to Kumasi traders. Timber and chainsaw milling remain a secondary livelihood, and Kukuom holds the district’s main market and assembly offices.
Incomes here are strongly seasonal, rising with the main cocoa harvest from October to January. The recorded population decline between 2010 and 2021 is consistent with young people moving out to Kumasi, Sunyani and the mining towns for work. Farming remains almost entirely smallholder and rain-fed.
Getting There
Kukuom is about 20 km south of Goaso on the road that continues to Sankore and Kwapong. From Sunyani the drive runs through Bechem, Hwidiem and Goaso. Roads inside the district are mostly untarred and slow in the wet season, roughly June to October.
Kumasi is the nearest large city and the destination for most produce leaving the district. Buses for Kumasi and Accra load at Goaso rather than Kukuom, so travellers usually make the short hop north first.
