Geography
The district lies inland from the coast, in moist semi-deciduous forest drained by the Pra and its tributaries. Kakum National Park and the Assin Attandanso reserve take up a large share of its southern land, and the park’s main gate is at Abrafo. Cape Coast lies to the south and Twifo Ati-Morkwa to the north, along the same road.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa is the leading cash crop, with oil palm, plantain, cassava, cocoyam and maize grown for food and for sale. Timber and small sawmills work the forest fringes. Tourism adds a second stream: Jukwa and Abrafo sit on the visitor route to Kakum National Park and its canopy walkway, and guiding, lodging and food stalls follow that traffic. Local markets rotate through the larger villages on fixed days.
Twi is spoken throughout, and land is held under stool and family arrangements, with caretaker farming common on cocoa plots. The park boundary shapes daily life at the southern end of the district: farming is restricted inside the reserve, and crop damage by elephants is a recurring complaint in the villages along its edge.
Getting There
The Cape Coast to Twifo Praso road runs north through the district and carries most traffic. Jukwa is about 30 km from Cape Coast, and Hemang lies further north on the same road. Trotros and shared taxis leave Cape Coast through the day; tour vehicles for Kakum use the Abrafo turnoff.
