Geography
Yilo Krobo covers the hills and lower slopes west of the Krobo mountain, in the south-east of the
Eastern Region. The land is broken and stony in the east and flattens westward toward the Akuapim foothills.
Streams here drain south into the Volta plain.
It borders Lower Manya Krobo to the east and Upper Manya Krobo to the north. The
Akuapim ridge runs away to the south-west, toward Akuapim South.
Two rainy seasons water the district, the main one from April to July, and the harmattan is felt from
December. Soils on the lower slopes are shallow and stony, which favours tree crops such as mango over
continuous cropping.
Economy and Local Life
Most households farm. Mango is the signature crop of the Somanya area, alongside cassava, maize,
pepper, garden eggs and other vegetables grown for the Accra market. Nkurakan sits on a busy stretch of road
and holds a large produce market that draws traders from the capital. Powder-glass bead making, common to both
Krobo areas, is practised in a number of communities, and Somanya carries the district’s shops, banks, schools
and transport yards.
Somanya carries the municipal offices, a hospital, banks and several second-cycle and tertiary
institutions, which brings students and staff into the town. Away from the road, communities rely on weekly
markets and shared taxis for supplies and for moving produce.
Getting There
Somanya is about 70 km from Accra. The usual route runs through Dodowa and Nkurakan, or through Kpong
on the Accra–Ho road. Trotros and shared taxis serve Somanya from Accra, Koforidua and Odumase all day,
and a tarred road links Somanya to Huhunya and the northern communities.
