Geography
Fanteakwa lies on the northern edge of the Eastern Region’s forest belt, where the land climbs to the scarp above Begoro and then falls away towards the Volta basin. Streams feeding the Volta drain the northern half. Osino and Nsutam sit on the Accra to Kumasi highway in the west of the district, while Begoro is reached by the road running north from Koforidua. Atiwa to the west, East Akim to the south-west and Kwahu West to the north-west.
The scarp gives the district two distinct halves: forest farming country in the south and drier, more open land running down to the Volta in the north.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa, oil palm, plantain, cassava, cocoyam and maize are the standard crops, with citrus and vegetables grown near the main roads. Begoro is the district’s market and administrative town and holds its secondary schools and hospital. Osino and Nsutam trade on highway traffic, selling bread, fruit and cooked food to travellers between Accra and Kumasi. Timber and charcoal move out of the northern villages, and small-scale mining occurs along some streams.
Cattle and small livestock are kept more widely in the north than in the forest districts, and farmers there face a longer dry season. Fishing and lakeside trade occur where the district reaches the Volta.
Getting There
Begoro is about 40 km north of Koforidua by road, roughly an hour’s drive. Travellers from Accra can also leave the N6 highway at Osino or Nsutam and turn east for Begoro. Trotros run between Koforidua and Begoro through the day.
