Geography
Kintampo North occupies the northern end of the Bono East Region, in the forest-savanna transition zone. Wooded savanna and farmland cover most of it, with strips of riverine forest. The Black Volta forms part of the western boundary, and the Pumpu River drops over a series of ledges just outside Kintampo town to form the Kintampo Waterfalls, the district’s best-known landmark. The main rains run from April to July with a second peak in September and October.
Regional neighbours include Kintampo South immediately to the south and Pru to the east.
Economy and Local Life
Farming supports most households. Yam, maize, cassava, groundnuts, cowpea, sorghum and vegetables are the staples, and cashew has become the leading cash crop across the transition belt. Livestock rearing is widespread, and charcoal burning, firewood cutting and sawmilling add dry-season income.
Kintampo town is the commercial anchor: it has the municipal assembly, a busy market and lorry station, a hospital, a college of health and a long-established health research centre. Its position on the trunk road makes it a natural rest and transfer point for travellers and freight moving between Kumasi and Tamale. The waterfalls draw weekend visitors and support guides, food sellers and small lodgings.
Getting There
The N10 Kumasi–Techiman–Kintampo–Tamale road runs straight through Kintampo, so access is simple by Ghanaian standards. From Techiman, the regional capital, the drive north takes about 90 minutes; Kumasi is roughly three hours away and Tamale about four. Intercity buses on the Kumasi–Tamale run stop in Kintampo daily, and shared taxis serve the outlying communities on feeder roads.
