Geography
Birim South lies in the west of the Eastern Region, in the forest belt along the Birim River. The
terrain is low and rolling, with cocoa farms, oil palm and secondary forest between the settlements. Akim
Swedru, Akroso and Achiasi are the larger communities.
Its neighbours in the region include Birim North to the north and Denkyembour to the
north-west.
The area lies in the wet semi-equatorial belt, with a long rainy season from March to July and a second
from September to November, and no true dry month in most years. Forest ochrosol soils support tree crops
across the district.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa and oil palm are the leading cash crops, grown with plantain, cocoyam, cassava and maize. The
Birim valley has been diamond and gold country for a century, and small-scale winning continues in places
along the river. Akim Swedru holds the district market and the main lorry station, and buyers from Oda and
Kade collect cocoa and palm fruit from the villages during the season.
Akim Swedru carries the district offices, a hospital and second-cycle schools; Oda, a short drive away,
supplies the wholesale trade and specialist services. Gari processing, palm-oil boiling, carpentry and
transport work are the common trades outside farming.
Getting There
Akim Swedru is about 20 km from Oda by tarred road, and roughly 100 km from Koforidua. Most travellers
come through Oda or Akroso; trotros and shared taxis link the town with Oda, Akwatia and Kade. Feeder roads to
outlying farming villages are earth surfaced.
