Geography
Ga South lies south-west of Accra, running from the Atlantic shore inland across
the Accra plain. Bortianor, Kokrobite and Faana sit on the coast, where sandy beaches and rocky points
alternate. Inland the ground is low, dry grassland used for farming and quarrying.
The Densu River forms much of the eastern boundary and feeds the Weija reservoir, which supplies a
large part of Accra’s water. The municipality borders the Central Region to the west,
Ga West to the north and the
built-up districts of Accra to the
east.
Economy and Local Life
Farming still matters here more than in most of Greater Accra: cassava, maize,
pepper, okra and vegetables go to Accra’s markets, along with poultry and pigs. Coastal villages fish
with canoes and beach seines, and smoked fish is traded inland.
Quarrying and sand winning are heavy local industries on the plain, feeding Accra’s construction
trade. Kokrobite and Bortianor draw weekend visitors to the beaches, and Mallam, at the eastern edge,
is a busy junction market and transport hub.
Getting There
The Winneba road (N1 west) is the spine of the municipality, running from
Mallam junction through Ngleshie Amanfro towards Kasoa and the Central Region. The coastal villages
are reached by the Bortianor and Kokrobite branch roads south of it.
Trotros run from Kaneshie and Mallam stations. Ngleshie Amanfro is about 25 km from central
Accra, though the Mallam–Kasoa stretch is often congested.
