Geography
Banda occupies the north-western tip of the Bono Region. The Black Volta forms its western and northern boundary, separating it from Côte d’Ivoire and from the Savannah Region. The Banda hills run through the district, and the country is dry savanna woodland. Bui, on the river, is the site of the Bui hydroelectric dam and lies beside Bui National Park. The climate is dry, with one rainy season and a long harmattan.
Within the region the district adjoins Tain to the south-east and lies north-west of Wenchi.
Economy and Local Life
Farming and fishing support most households. Yam, maize, cassava, groundnut and cashew are the main crops, and the Black Volta and the Bui reservoir support inland fishing. Livestock keeping is common. Banda Ahenkro holds the district market; Bui Camp grew as a settlement serving the dam. Charcoal burning and shea collection add seasonal income. Cashew has spread onto former bush fallow over the past two decades.
Banda is thinly settled by regional standards, and villages are small and widely spaced. Farms are mostly rain-fed and worked by hand, and yam mounds are prepared at the end of the dry season. The reservoir behind the dam changed river access for several riverside communities, and fishing camps now work its shoreline.
Getting There
Banda Ahenkro is reached from Wenchi by the road running west through Nsawkaw, or from Sunyani via Berekum and Nsawkaw. Allow around three hours from Sunyani. Vehicles are fewer than in the eastern districts, and most services run in the morning. The road into the district is tarred as far as Banda Ahenkro; beyond it, feeder roads to the riverside villages are rough and slow after rain.
