Geography
Daffiama Bussie Issa lies in the middle of the Upper West Region, east of the trunk
road that runs north from Wa. The district takes its name from its three main towns: Daffiama, Busie
and Issa, the district capital. The country is flat Guinea savanna with seasonal streams and
scattered shea, dawadawa and baobab trees. Nadowli-Kaleo lies to the west
and south, Jirapa to the north-west, and
Wa East to the south-east.
Economy and Local Life
The district is farming country. Millet, sorghum, maize, groundnuts, cowpea, bambara
beans and yam are grown in the single rainy season, and dry-season gardening along the streams
produces onions, tomatoes and leafy vegetables. Livestock keeping — cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and
guinea fowl — supplements crop income. Shea nut collection and butter processing are important to
household cash flow. Issa, Daffiama, Busie and Fian hold the district’s main markets.
Dagaare is the everyday language and the compound farm is the basic unit of land and labour. The district is small and entirely rural, with no large town: Issa functions as an administrative centre rather than a commercial one. Seasonal migration to southern Ghana between harvest and planting is common, and remittances pay for school fees, roofing sheets and farm inputs.
Getting There
Issa is reached from Wa by taking the Hamile trunk road north to Nadowli or Kaleo and
turning east onto the district road. Daffiama and Busie sit on the same route. Minibuses and shared
taxis run from Wa, and the feeder roads are passable in the dry season but slow after heavy rain.
