Geography
Upper West Akim lies in the south of the Eastern Region, in the semi-deciduous forest zone. The land
is low and rolling, drained by the Densu and its tributaries, and much of it is under cocoa, oil palm and food
farms. Adeiso, the capital, stands on the road between Nsawam and Asamankese.
It borders West Akim to the north-west and Ayensuano to the east; the Central Region
lies to the south.
Rain falls in two seasons, the heavier from March to July, and the harmattan is short and mild here.
The forest has largely been converted to farmland, with remnant trees left on cocoa plots for shade and a few
reserved blocks still standing.
Economy and Local Life
Farming dominates. Cocoa and oil palm are the main cash crops, with citrus, cassava, plantain,
cocoyam and maize grown alongside them. Palm fruit is processed in small mills, and cassava is grated for gari
in many villages. Adeiso holds the district’s principal market and its transport station; smaller communities
depend on it for inputs, milling and produce buyers, most of whom truck the harvest on to Accra.
Adeiso carries the district offices, a health centre and the main second-cycle school, and Nsawam and
Asamankese serve the district for hospital care and wholesale trade. Charcoal burning, carpentry, dressmaking
and driving are the usual trades outside farming.
Getting There
Adeiso is about 55 km from Accra by way of Nsawam, on the Nsawam–Asamankese road. Trotros run
from Nsawam and Asamankese through the day. Roads inside the district are mostly untarred feeder roads and
slow after heavy rain.
