Shabelle Zone (Somali: Shabeelle) is one of eleven zones in Ethiopia’s Somali Region, strung along the Shebelle River in the south of the Ogaden. Its administrative centre is Gode, Somali Godey, the region’s second-largest town. The zone counted 464,253 people at the 2007 census and has ten woredas. It was known as Gode Zone until the regional renaming of the 2010s, when it took the river’s name.

Geography
Shabelle lies in the south of the Somali Region, bordered on the west by Afder Zone, on the north by Nogob Zone and Erer Zone, on the north-east by Korahe Zone, and on the south by the provisional administrative line with Somalia.
The Shebelle River is the defining feature. It enters from the north-west, swings east past Gode, Kelafo and Mustahil, and crosses into Somalia at Ferfer. Six of the seven census-era woredas sit on its banks. The land is exceptionally flat: gently sloping ground covers 94 per cent of the zone, at 250 to 500 metres. Land use runs about 56 per cent pasture, 33 per cent woodland and shrub, and 11 per cent arable. Flooding along the river is a regular hazard, and drought between floods is just as regular.
Demographics
The 2007 census recorded 464,253 residents: 258,558 men and 205,695 women. Somali was the first language of 98.98 per cent, and 98.76 per cent reported being Muslim. Urban dwellers made up 19.3 per cent, the highest share outside Fafan Zone.
Central Statistical Agency projections carry the seven census-era woredas to 682,481 by 2022, about 47 per cent above the count. Ethiopia has held no census since 2007, so that is a projection.
Economy & Local Life
The river makes Shabelle different from the rest of the Ogaden. Between 40 and 50 per cent of the population depends on irrigated farming, 25 to 30 per cent on agro-pastoralism, and 20 to 30 per cent on pastoralism. Maize, sorghum, sesame, onions, tomatoes and fodder are grown on riverside plots, and Gode has been the site of state irrigation schemes since the 1970s.
Livestock still matters: camels, goats and cattle are traded at Gode, Kelafo and Ferfer, and stock crosses into Somalia. Gode is the commercial and administrative hub for the southern Ogaden, with the zone’s airport, hospital and main market. The Calub and Hilala gas fields, in and near the zone, sit at the centre of Ethiopia’s Ogaden Basin energy plans.
Getting There
Gode Airport carries scheduled Ethiopian Airlines flights from Addis Ababa, the fastest way in. By road, Gode is about 190 km south-west of Kebri Dehar and roughly 600 km from Jijiga, all on gravel south of Degehabur. A western route reaches Gode from Imi and Afder. Roads downstream to Kelafo, Mustahil and Ferfer follow the river and can be cut by floods.
