Kebena Special Woreda (Amharic: ቀቤና ልዩ ወረዳ) is one of three special woredas in Ethiopia’s Central Ethiopia Region, alongside Mareko and Tembaro. Geography
Kebena occupies rolling highland on the northern edge of the Gurage country, north-west of Welkite. The Wabe River runs along the southern and eastern side, separating the woreda from the Kokir Gedebano district of Gurage Zone. Abeshge, also in Gurage Zone, lies to the west, and the Oromia Region borders the woreda to the north.

Farming here follows the Gurage highland pattern: enset as the food staple, with teff, wheat, barley, maize and pulses in rotation, and cattle kept for milk and ploughing. Chat is grown for sale. The area has a long reputation for tobacco, which the geographer Élisée Reclus singled out in the nineteenth century. Welkite’s market on the Addis Ababa to Jimma road is where most Kebena produce is sold, and its proximity keeps transport costs lower here than in the more remote highland woredas.
History
Kebena was an independent polity before its annexation into the Ethiopian empire in 1889. The Kebena people trace descent partly from Muslim communities that moved into the Gurage highlands, which accounts for the woreda’s distinct language and religious profile within the surrounding zone. Special woreda status recognises that distinctness administratively, and Kebena kept it when the SNNPR was divided and the Central Ethiopia Region formed in 2023.

Welkite is the gateway. It sits about 155 km south-west of Addis Ababa on the asphalt Jimma road, and buses run through the day. From Welkite, feeder roads run north-west into the woreda towards Wosherbe, a short drive that is slower in the rainy season. The nearest scheduled airport is Jimma, roughly 190 km further west.
