South Wollo (Amharic: ደቡብ ወሎ, Debub Wollo) is a zone in the east of Ethiopia’s Amhara Region, with its capital at Dessie. It covers about 17,067 square kilometres and holds 19 rural woredas plus the town administrations of Dessie and Kombolcha. The 2007 census counted 2,518,862 residents in the zone as then bounded; on current boundaries the same census totals 2,646,633, with about 3.5 million projected for 2022.
The zone is named after the historic province of Wollo. It is the most religiously mixed part of the Amhara Region, with a Muslim majority and a large Orthodox Christian minority.

Geography
South Wollo borders North Shewa and the Oromia Special Zone to the south, East Gojjam to the west, South Gondar to the north-west, North Wollo to the north and Afar Region to the north-east.
The zone straddles the eastern escarpment. Its western woredas, Sayint, Mehal Sayint, Mekdela and Delanta, sit on high ridges above the Abay tributary gorges and rise above 4,200 metres in the Sayint highlands. The centre around Dessie and Kutaber is temperate farmland between 2,300 and 2,800 metres. East of Kombolcha the Borkena valley drops towards the Rift and the Afar plain. Lake Hayq, a freshwater crater lake at about 2,030 metres, lies north of Dessie in Tehuledere woreda.
Demographics
The 2007 census recorded 2,518,862 people for the zone as then constituted, 1,248,698 men and 1,270,164 women. Urban residents were 11.98 per cent.
The Amhara were 96.33 per cent of the population and Amharic the first language of 98.65 per cent. Islam was reported by 65.89 per cent and Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity by 34.11 per cent, a balance found nowhere else in the region. Wollo has a long tradition of Islamic scholarship, with shrines and teaching centres at Jama, Kalu and around Dessie. The 2022 projection of about 3.5 million is an estimate, not a count.
Economy & Local Life
Farming is mixed and altitude-driven: barley, wheat and pulses on the high ground, teff and maize in the middle belt, sorghum and chat on the eastern slopes. Rural households average about 0.7 hectares. Drought is a recurring risk and several woredas appear on the regional food-insecurity lists.
Dessie and Kombolcha form the region’s second industrial corridor. Kombolcha has an industrial park, a textile mill, a cement works and a dry port on the Djibouti freight corridor, and the two towns are treated as twins, 12 kilometres apart. Dessie holds the zone’s referral hospital and Wollo University’s main campus. Lake Hayq and the fourteenth-century Hayq Estifanos monastery draw visitors, and Mekdela woreda holds the amba fortress where Emperor Tewodros II died in 1868.
Getting There
Dessie is about 400 kilometres north of Addis Ababa on Ethiopian highway 2, roughly seven hours by road through Debre Birhan and Kemise. Kombolcha, 12 kilometres to the south-east, has the zone’s airport with flights to Addis Ababa, and sits on the main road east to Bati, Mille and Djibouti. Buses run daily from Addis Ababa to Dessie and on to Weldiya.
