Alexandria Governorate (Arabic: الإسكندرية, Egyptian Arabic: محافظة اسكندريه) is one of Egypt’s governorates. Alexandria was historically Egypt’s capital until Fustat was founded and eventually subsumed into Cairo.
Today, Alexandria is regarded as the second most important governorate after Cairo. It is located in Egypt’s northern region, immediately on the Mediterranean Sea, making it one of the country’s most important ports.
