Geography
The Murrumbidgee River borders the county on the north, and the Tumut River on the east. The county rises from Riverina floodplain around Wagga Wagga into the foothills of the Snowy Mountains near Batlow and Tumut. It borders Bourke, Clarendon, Harden, Mitchell, Buccleuch, Goulburn and Selwyn counties.
History
Wynyard County was named for Major-General Robert Henry Wynyard, a British Army officer who administered the colony of New Zealand before the county’s proclamation. Wagga Wagga grew from a river crossing on the Murrumbidgee into the Riverina’s principal city through the second half of the 19th century. New South Wales’ 141 counties were surveyed through the 19th century as the colony’s basic land-administration grid, ahead of and separate from local government; they still fix parish-based land descriptions in the state’s Torrens title system today.
