Towns and Localities Today
West Wyalong, built on the old Wyalong goldfield, is the largest town in Gipps County and the seat of Bland Shire. Ungarie, to the west, and Caragabal, on the county’s eastern edge, are the other named towns. South Condobolin, a parish on the fringe of Condobolin, links the county to Lachlan Shire’s main town.
Geography
Gipps County lies in the transitional country between the central-west wheat belt and the Riverina plains. Neighbouring counties include Blaxland, Cunningham, Ashburnham, Dowling, Forbes, Cooper, Bourke and Bland.
History
Surveyors proclaimed Gipps County as part of the colonial land-division system that divided New South Wales into counties, parishes and portions for the sale and lease of Crown land. It is named for Sir George Gipps, Governor of New South Wales from 1838 to 1846. The 1893 Wyalong gold rush, one of the last major NSW rushes, drove the growth of West Wyalong within the county.
