History
The county was named for John Blaxland, an early colonial landowner, explorer and merchant, and brother of Gregory Blaxland of the 1813 Blue Mountains crossing. Its parishes cover semi-arid pastoral runs taken up as settlement pushed west of the Lachlan River in the nineteenth century, land too dry and remote for the closer subdivision seen further east. The Nombinnie Nature Reserve now protects mallee woodland within the county’s central parishes.
