Akoko Edo is a community with various portions, each with historic pride and enduring stance.

Yoruba are claimed to have been the first immigrants of Akoko Edo at the time the Etsako moved from Oyo under the reign of (1483-1504). Other migrants arrived from Nupe to make Benin city the spillover of the Ado-Ekiti people from the west. Ado-Ekiti Benin, Ondo, and Ekiti were once part of the Oyo Empire. It’s no surprise that Akoko-Edo is still in Ekiti. Oba Esigie’s conflict with the Attah of Idah in 1515-1516 would have drawn many Igbirra and Idah from the north and east.

Ancient Akoko-Edo located in northern Edo, south of the Niger-Benue Confluence. Its dominant geographical and environmental features include chains of ancient ridges of rugged rocky hills and a cave, stretching throughout what is now known as the Akoko-Edo LGA of the present Northern Edo State, located between latitudes 45 N, 35 N, and 55 E, 6 E. Akoko-Edo, with a population of 124,000 in 1991 and 261,567 in 2006, occupies 1, 371 square kilometres or 6.5% of Edoland and 5.7% of Edo state’s population.

The region is the ancestral homeland of all Edoid-speaking subethnic peoples. Akoko-Edo is bordered by Kwara and Kogi in the north, Ondo in the north-west, Etsako west (Auchiclans) and north (Okpella) in the south-east, and Owan in the south-west.

Akoko Edo’s 8 languages overlap. The Ojiramis (Group II) understand their neighbours Akuku and Enwan, but not the other village. Older people speak Yoruba. Akoko Edo speaks mostly Pidgin English.
