Southern Ijaw Towns And Villages
Southern Ijaw is a Local Government Area in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Its headquarters sits at Oporoma, also called Osokoma, in the LGA’s north. The area covers 2,682 square kilometres, the largest LGA in Bayelsa, with about 60 kilometres of coastline on the Bight of Benin.
The 2006 census counted 321,808 residents. Projections put the 2022 figure near 479,000. Southern Ijaw holds 17 wards, among them Oporoma, Otuan, Foropa, Apoi, Ukubie and Koluama. The postal code is 560.
Izon (Ijaw) is the main language and ethnic group. Amassoma hosts Niger Delta University; Ekowe hosts the Federal Polytechnic. Most settlements sit along creeks and rivers and are reachable only by boat.
